The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) is the UK’s leading professional body for food science and technology, representing a diverse community of over 3,800 professionals across academia, industry and the wider food sector. With more than 60 years of heritage, IFST has played a central role in advancing the science that underpins safe, nutritious, sustainable and innovative food; supporting progress across the food system and strengthening consumer confidence. A key milestone in IFST’s history was the granting of a Royal Charter in 2025, recognising the Institute’s enduring impact, public benefit mission, and commitment to professional excellence. As the professional home for food scientists and technologists, IFST champions high standards, integrity and continuous learning, helping individuals and organisations apply science effectively in a fast-changing world.
IFST’s work spans three core areas.
